"I can't believe you didn't tell me!"
Jensen's in the process of undoing his tie, throwing it over the armchair. "You're overreacting."
"I --" Jared stops and collects himself. "I've been nervous about meeting your parents for weeks, Jensen, and all you kept saying was how amazing they are and how successful they've been."
"You're angry about that?"
"No," Jared mutters. "I'm just -- why didn't you tell me your dad worked in a steel mill for twenty five years before he retired?"
"I'm pretty sure I mentioned that."
"You didn't," Jared snaps. "I know that for a fact because I wouldn't have been half as nervous to meet your parents if I'd known!"
Now Jensen's scowling. They've made it nearly 24 hours into their trip to see Jensen's parents without arguing. Mostly, Jared's nerves had kept him from talking, but once Mr. Ackles had shaken his hand with that firm, callused grip, Jared had lost it. Raising a doctor as whip-smart and sensible as Jensen, Jared figured the Ackles had to be impressive parents. Not snobby, because no one as kind as Jensen could come from less-than-polite Texas stock, but intimidating in their success.
But Mr. Ackles, upon finding out that Jared was in the construction business, had started right in on stories from his days in the steel mill, swapping bragging rights as to who'd toughed it out the most. Jared let Mr. Ackles win on principle. Mrs. Ackles had been sweet, a perfect hostess, coddling her son and his boyfriend from the get go and refilling their sweet tea as often as it was needed. He learned that Jensen's mother had been a teacher, only recently retired, and that Jensen's parents had saved for years to help Jensen go to college and follow his dreams of becoming a doctor. Jensen paid them back with plenty of trips home when he got time off, and little vacations to quaint Bed & Breakfast Inns every year on their anniversary.
It was all a bit humbling and Jared hadn't been prepared for that.
"I just don't get why you let me freak out about meeting them."
"You're kinda hot when you're going a little crazy," Jensen tells him, fingers slipping his belt off.
"Jen--"
"I never thought it mattered," Jensen says. He's unbuttoning his shirt like he's eager to be naked, clearly indulging Jared with this conversation. "I didn't want you to have any preconceptions going in, but seriously, I knew you'd get along with them. They're good people, Jared, and you're the guy I want to be with, which should be more than enough for my parents to like you."
Before Jared can comprehend that he's losing all ground in this disagreement, Jensen's got his shirt off. From the look on Jensen's face, Jared gets the feeling that the argument's not going any further and he'd better get on board with Jensen's distraction technique.
"So, are we gonna keep talking about this, or...?"
Jared sighs, drifting close. "I can't stay mad at you."
Jensen chuckles. "Oh yes, you can! Remember when I dragged you out to my friend's engagement party and you had a miserable time? You didn't talk to me for four days."
"I forgot about that."
"Doesn't matter." Jensen shakes his head and reels Jared in, pulling his hands right up over his chest. That's a kink his boyfriend's never gotten over -- to Jensen, there's nothing more erotic than just having Jared touching naked skin. "I'm just glad you're not mad at me now."
"I do like your parents."
"I'm glad." Jensen kisses him once on the lips. "But we need to stop talking about them, like, right now."
"Good plan," Jared says just before he knocks Jensen back onto the bed and covers the length of him.
