I'm bored and I've reached my limits on Big Bang revisions and additions for today. Plus, I have no interest in engaging with work this afternoon.

Prompt me with something timestampy! I reserve the right to comment back with "you're nuts!" if you request something really whacky, as well as the right to ignore you if you prompt me with something CSI related ;)

Otherwise, pick a story and leave a prompt!

Birthday Treat | Cash or Check!verse

"This place is amazing." Jared's salary is pretty decent, but he's never been able to afford a dinner at Orchid. The tables are appointed with modern, square-cut wine glasses and sleek silverware, black chargers under hand-painted plates. "Are you sure this is where you wanted to come?" he asks Jensen.

"You want me to give up the reservation I worked so hard to get?" Jensen laughs. "I like you, but this food is worth spending an entire paycheck on."

"My paycheck, you mean."

His boyfriend gasps, mock-affronted. "You want me to pay for my own birthday dinner?"

"I'm just saying, you'd better have some spectacular birthday sex in mind for later," Jared says, picking up the menu and licking his lips.

"I might be too full from all of this amazing food," Jensen teases. "So we'll see."

Jensen had been planning this night out for weeks, intent on cramming as much into his birthday as he could before preparations for his defense took him away from Jared for days at a time. Jared let him go wild and they'd already spent the first part of their Saturday out at a Yankees game, screaming their lungs out as they both rooted for the other team. Dinner at Orchid had been Jensen's surprise, insisting Jared get himself all dressed up. Of course, Jensen didn't look half bad, either.

For a grad student, Jensen owned a killer wardrobe. He rarely needed the expensive suits these days -- he'd quit the escort business less than a month after he and Jared starting dating seriously. Tonight he's wearing a light gray suit, sky blue tie bringing the outfit together. Jared had to resist jumping him before they left for dinner, but Jensen told him there'd be hell to pay if they were late.

Jared flinches when he looks at the menu. He doesn't see a single price listed which means that everything is probably out of his budget. But damn, everything sounds so fucking delicious, his mouth is watering despite thoughts of going bankrupt over Alaskan salmon and organic beef from Texas stock.

And when the waiter brings their entrees and Jared gets a taste, he feels like he's died and gone to a place better than Heaven, if it exists.

"Told you so." Jensen smirks.

"You might have to start selling yourself again to pay the bill," Jared says between scrumptious bites.

"And I, for one, would hire him," a rough voice says from above them. Jared looks up and sees a well dressed man hovering at the side of their private table, his salt and pepper hair only adding to how attractive he is.

"Jeff!" Jensen stands and wraps the man an intimate hug. Jared's left gaping with a tender piece of steak in his mouth. He quickly swallows before Jensen starts making introductions.

"Jared, this is Jeff Morgan. He's the owner of this restaurant." Then, to Jeff, "this is Jared, my boyfriend."

"Boyfriend?" Jeff looks Jared up and down but there's nothing intimidating in his eyes. On the contrary, they're almost too warm. As Jensen sits down, Jeff takes one of the extra chairs. "You've certainly done well for yourself, Jensen," he adds with a wink. "Together, you two make an enticing picture."

"Jeff..." Jensen starts to say.

"What? I can't admire my clientele?" Jeff laughs, a richer sound than Jared's expecting. "You used to check me out all the time when we'd go out."

Jared figures it out. "You and Jensen--"

"Jeff was a repeat client of mine," Jensen explains, no hint of shame in his voice. Usually Jared admires the fact that Jensen's proud of the way he used to earn money. But tonight, that pride feels wrong. "He took me to some of the nicest restaurants in the city."

"Got you hooked on fine cuisine," Jeff says. "How's mine compare?"

"It's amazing, Jeff. I mean it. This place is absolutely wonderful!"

"And Jared," Jeff turns to him. "What do you think?"

"I'm not used to food like this," he says, "but everything is excellent."

"I've been trying to get Jensen to come around for months. He helped me with some of the details of this place," Jeff tells Jared. "He's got a great eye for interior design even if he has zero interest in that as a career. I felt like I owed him for all of his help, so when he called--"

"When I called asking for reservations," Jensen cuts in, "Jeff answered and we got to talking again. I think that's the only reason we got a table."

"Anything for you, Jensen. Call anytime and I'll have my hostess fit you in."

Jeff sounds so sincere, happy to have Jensen in his restaurant. The tumbling in Jared's stomach feels a little like jealousy, but more like disappointment in himself. There's a lot he has yet to learn about Jensen beyond his favorite sexual positions and what his face looks like when he comes. Sure, the sex is amazing, but they've been having a lot of it. Doesn't leave a hell of a lot of time for conversation. He envies that warmth in Jeff's voice when he talks about Jensen, the things he knows that Jared hasn't discovered yet. He resolves to make more of an effort.

"Jared?"

Jensen's looking at him, tight expression on his face.

"Sorry, I was just thinking for a second."

Jeff clears his throat. "I should let you two get back to your dinner. I like stopping by every table, but you are both my special guests tonight. If you need anything, just ask and it's yours."

After Jeff walks away, Jared's stuck in a fog until Jensen squeezes his thigh under the table.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I just didn't realize that you and Jeff--that we'd be eating at your former client's place."

"I may have used that fact to my advantage to get us in here," Jensen says. "Are you mad?"

"No." Jared tells himself he means it, repeating it all the way through the rest of the meal.

###

Jared is surprised when their check never comes. He asks their waiter but he just smiles and says, "Compliments of Mr. Morgan."

Next to him, Jensen's smiling.

"You knew he was picking up our tab?"

Jensen shrugs. "Like he said, he's been begging me to come in. I didn't ask for any consulting fees when I helped design this place, so when he told me dinner would be on him, I wasn't gonna argue."

"So," Jared levels his voice, "your got one of your exes--"

"Ex-client."

"Whatever, you got Jeff to buy your dinner on your birthday..."

"He doesn't know it's my birthday."

"What?"

"He doesn't know," Jensen repeats. "I never mentioned it. Look," he sighs, "if I just wanted to see Jeff or try his food, I could have come here anytime. But, since I had the chance, I wanted you here, spending my birthday with me and some seriously amazing food."

"So Jeff buying dinner--"

"Is just a nice gesture from a friend," Jensen says. "That's all. Icing on the cake, as far as I'm concerned."

"Icing's the best part of the cake," Jared teases, breathing a little easier.

"Not for me. I like the cake, every flavor of it."

They both laugh, turning heads across the restaurant. Neither sees, but Jeff smiles fondly in their direction from behind the bar.

"Now," Jensen says, pulling out his wallet and leaving two twenties under his wine glass for their waiter, "all this food and talk of cake has got me all hot and bothered, and there's only one former client I want taking me home tonight."

"Yeah? Who's that?"

"Some lawyer who's too dense to figure out that I'm starting to love him, little jealous moments and all."

Jared grins, finding Jensen's hand under the table and folding their fingers together.

"I promise he's beginning to figure that out."

I love the minor jealousy and awkwardness but of course, Jensen's cool as a cucumber and pulls 'em through it. I love how natural their conversations are and how easy the banter flows. BANTERY STILL!

So lovely! I felt for Jared, but then when he realized Jeff didn't know everything about Jensen - didn't know his birthday - aww. <3
