Summary: As a young chef trying to break into the sizzling hot world of Charleston cuisine, Jensen Ackles spent more time in the kitchen than he did sleeping, eating, or socializing; he was absolutely dedicated to his craft and to the mentor who’d given him a chance. When all of that work paid off in a big way, Jensen was thrilled, but from the moment he accepted his dream job, other aspects of his life began to sour, quickly.

Now, shouldered with the extra burdens of caring for his brother’s house and keeping his job safe from a brown-nosing new sous chef, Jensen tries everything, up to and including therapy, to keep his life from boiling over. It’s not until he hires college senior Jared Padalecki that things start to turn around, and Jensen learns that if he can stand the heat, fate might cook up something even better.

[livejournal.com profile] secretlytodream made an amazing movie trailer for this fic, so please please please watch that first! She even added a few glorious shots of Charleston and actual Charleston restaurants :)

notes.
This story began as an adaptation of No Reservations for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema challenge, but when the story began taking on a plot of its own, I decided to write it for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang instead. [livejournal.com profile] secretlytodream was there from the very beginning, encouraging me to turn what would have been a short story into an epic tale of a hassled chef and his kind-hearted dog-sitter. When Loki suggested a collaboration, I was totally on board!

I’m glad I didn’t stick to the plot of the original movie, because this story became so much more than a re-write. There are shout-outs to No Reservations in the form of well-known lines and a scene here and there, but I think these characters can stand on their own.

Research was the best part ♥ I got to watch a lot of ‘Chopped,’ had an excuse to eat at some of my favorite Charleston restaurant and jot down little tidbits I learned from cooks and waiters along the way, and read more than a few culinary magazines.

If you’re asking why I didn’t set this story in a ‘major’ city like New York, or even somewhere in Texas, I would encourage you to look up Charleston’s reputation. Not only is my city one of the top-rated travel destinations in the entire world, but we’re pretty snobby about our local food culture, too! And for good reason *wink* The magazine Jensen ends up working for is a real thing, called The Local Palate, though I created the character of Reid Canton. Other real Charleston settings include: The Macintosh. The Blind Tiger Pub. Fuel. Basil. Goat/Sheep/Cow. The Bull Street Market. Cru Cafe. Magnolias. Cypress. Blossom. And of course, Tristan (though it obviously has nothing to do with Jared).

people I could not have done this without.
First and foremost, I could not have finished this without [livejournal.com profile] secretlytodream! Loki was ready with ideas and encouragement at day one, and she put up with A LOT of whining from me. I have always wanted to work with Loki, and now that this project is finished, I can't wait to work with her again! Her art and trailer are amazing - do yourself a favor and please check out everything she's made for this story. She also put together the entire soundtrack, which was quite a feat as well ♥

Speaking of whining, I'm so glad I had someone like [livejournal.com profile] dugindeep (also known as my LIFE COACH) around. I went through every kind of emotion while I was writing this story, from euphoria to depression, and when I was at my worst, instead of telling me to give up, Amy encouraged me in her own ~special way ;) and made sure I never quit. There was probably a bit of reverse psychology in there, too! But I'm so grateful for her help. She also beta'ed this entire thing at the last minute, so she ROCKS, obviously.

Thank you to my friends' list and Twitter followers for getting excited every time I fed y'all a scene or a morsel of dialogue. I can only hope you enjoy this story ♥

Thanks to the mods for once again running this wonderful challenge!

Read the PDF. Wow. Your attention to detail and the way you made that kitchen just come to life. I know nothing about cooking let alone restaurant cooking. But it felt like I was watching them work. Very well done. I found myself cheering when Jensen finally quit. :)

Thank you! You're always one of the writers I look to, to know good story-telling, and hearing from you that this was enjoyable means a lot :)

I cheered when Jensen was thru, too, though mostly because it meant I was close to being done!

I read this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't read the other comments so I hope I am not repeating what a lot of other folks have said, but I think the best thing about the story for me was that Jensen's dilemma seemed completely realistic to me. He had a dream, it was derailed, but he couldn't let it go, despite the fact that he wasn't happy. I know so many people who get into that type of work situation but don't leave for a multitude of reasons and all of Jensen's were reasonable, though ultimately they couldn't override the reality that he was never going to be happy there.

I also thought Jared's reluctance to enter a relationship because of his concern about Jensen's situation was reasonable and mature (possibly more mature than I would have expected from someone his age).

And I loved the way it ended -- it made me so happy. Thank you so much for the time and effort you obviously put into this and for sharing it with us!

[identity profile] kelleigh.livejournal.com 2012-07-14 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm flattered that you had such wonderful things to say about this story! ♥ Real life is plenty dramatic, I always like to have the guys going through REAL dilemmas that we all can empathize with. Jensen just needed to figure out that his reasons for leaving were greater than the ones keeping him at the restaurant.

And yeah, I thought Jared was being REALLY responsible when he backed off, but his motivation was pretty good :P

Thanks so much for all the great comments!

Being a SC girl, a loving Charleston, I had no choice but to read this fic...and am I ever glad I did! The plot was so real and the descriptions so vivid that I could see myself walking down East Bay and could even smell the salt air on James Island. Cypress is one of my fav resturants! Thank you SO much for not going with a larger metropolis, Charleston was perfect for this story. It's nice to know another Southern girl out there who is crazy about J2 also!

[identity profile] kelleigh.livejournal.com 2012-07-18 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Excellent! Getting feedback from someone familiar with the city is amazing, and while it's hard to do Charleston justice on paper, there were details I just couldn't leave out :) It was the perfect setting ♥

Definitely crazy about J2 over here :) Thank you so much!

Can't wait to read this! Not gonna lie, the shots of yummy food in the beautiful trailer made me hungry. *facepalm* Off to make dinner & sit down to read.

After I finished this (at, like, 4am) I sat there for a few minutes and all I could think was, "Wow!"
The story...I couldn't put it down. (I did mention the whole 4am thing, right?) Wonderful characterizations, fantastic story building, and I loved how you handled the changing and growing relationship between your Jensen and Jared. You didn't make it easy and...when your Jared turned Jensen away, I about had a coronary! But it made sense, it was...real.
Your writing...I almost never get jealous, and I'm teetering! LOL Grammar and punctuation, flow, and that glorious ability to bring the descriptive writing...without OVER bringing it. You nailed it.

Your story was an absolute delight and is one I'll keep to read again. Thank you so much for sharing!

I'm blushing! Thank you for having such wonderful things to say about my story ♥ There's so much drama, plot, and conflict in real life, that I tend to showcase that in my stories instead of reaching for big theatrics, and I love writing them so much. And the grammar doesn't come easily - that's definitely a product of several rereads on my own ;) And while I see so much of the story in front of my eyes, I only describe things that create setting and vibe, those things I can *really* see and taste and touch. It helps to focus on those details instead of every detail I know I could have included.

Thank you again for the amazing feedback! Re-reads are definitely the best kind of compliment ♥

This was fantastic! You did such a great job of paying attention to all the little details of taste and scents of the kitchen, and the slow burn of the boys' relationship was wonderful. Really well done, bb! The only problem? I'm REALLY hungry now! :D

[identity profile] kelleigh.livejournal.com 2012-07-22 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I can get lost writing all those details, but it's so much fun to put all of my vivid thoughts down in the story :) Thanks so much for the lovely feedback!

As you know, dumb old me read this at an inopportune time haha

BUT STILL SO WORTH IT.

Even with my mouth watering, I enjoyed every word of this Kels! I love the relationships you portrayed from Jared and Jensen to Jensen and his kitchen. I love the drama and emotions you poured into this. Basically, I adored it all!

Very pleasurable read! I like your depiction of food and scenery, makes me feel like I was there. I like how wise Jared is, keeping a distance from Jensen in spite of the mutual attraction. My favorite scene is when Jensen finally, finally quits!
