Three years ago, the world lost one of its heroes. Jensen Ackles, known to most as ‘Reactor,’ gave his life to save thousands, perhaps even to save our way of life. Jared Padalecki was there that day, amidst the ruin and rubble of battle, holding Jensen in his arms as he died. In the aftermath, as society mourned the loss of their superhero, Jared buried his husband on a quiet Texas hillside.

Now, Jared’s living as a shadow of his former self, unable to move beyond his loss, when the arrival of a strange object from deep in outer space sets in motion a series of events that challenges everything Jared thought he knew about Jensen’s past and hoped for their future. From old friends showing up at his door in Vancouver to a secret military base in the middle of Texas, Jared will go and risk everything, including his own sanity, to get Jensen back. But is Jensen still the same man he loved for so long, or will Jared lose him all over again? This time, the battle isn’t about saving the world - it’s about saving what they had.

notes. This story all came about from watching Justice League. While not the greatest superhero movie, I was struck by Superman's storyline. Specifically, his return and reunion with Lois. Damn, I wanted MORE. It couldn't be that easy when a superhero comes back from the dead, I thought to myself, and parts of this story immediately popped into my head. It's a story about grief, about reunions, and about risking everything to protect the life you want for yourself. I'm in love with these characters. I shed tears over them and fought them and adored them.

Also, you try coming up with a superhero name that works. It's agonizing.

I'm immensely proud of this story. Not only for the content, but for the amount of work that went into it. Literal blood, sweat, and (tonight) real tears. I haven't posted fic of any kind in over a year (so obviously I wanted to jump right back in with a 50K superhero story? I'm insane), so posting this right now is absolutely terrifying. I hope you enjoy reading this, I really do. It was an absolute labor, but one of absolute love, too.

This story would not have been possible without the support and skills of [livejournal.com profile] dugindeep who not only coaxed it along and checked the plot way back when I didn't know where it was headed, but who also guided me through panic attacks at the last minute. She dedicated herself to beta'ing this story, and it's immeasurably better for her help. And to [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver who I dreamed of working with even before we met in person, and her reputation precedes her. I could not be happier with the pieces she created for this story. She was willing to work with my vision down to specifics, and it's so beautiful I want to cry all over again. Thank you, C.

I love you both, it's ridiculous how much. New Year's roadtrips for life!

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] wendy for hosting once again and making this amazing challenge work year after year!

I am so so so so so so so proud of you and your words, crafting this story and bringing it to light. It has all the classic pieces of a grand Kelly story: evocative language, striking visuals, emotional connections (and romantic interludes that are for too emotional and synced to be just porn) and a grand crescendo into the finale. I have been so happy and excited to watch you create this and I am so fucking excited for everyone to read it and get the same depth of love and emotion that you put into it <3333 love u bae

I don't know what I would have done without you talking me through everything this past week, even up to the 11th hour when I was losing my damn mind!

LOVE YOU TOO MY DARLING! ♥ ♥

Lady, you have rocked this so hard, you should be eminently proud of yourself. I'M PROUD OF YOU.

I'm so glad we got to meet and work together, and I feel like this fic is one of your crowning glories. I'm thrilled to have been a part of it!

Now, OFF TO READ AGAIN!

You've written one of my fave tropes (Superheroes) allied to one of my fave things that ff writers rarely tackle - a major character death and aftermath. And given your inspiration I'm hoping for a happy ending too - so now I'm off to download from AO3 and hoping I can get to read it sooner rather than later! Woot!

I'm really hoping it lives up to the promise! I'd never written superheroes, but it was an amazing/terrifying experience that I hope paid off with a great story. The character death is a huge part, which I'm sure you can tell from the summary, but I hope the tale surprises you, regardless. Please let me know what you thought! ♥
